Ten Unforgettable Marketing Truths

Truth One:
The market is constantly changing. When you stop marketing, you miss evolving opportunities and cease being a part of the prospects decision making process. There will always be a competitor right behind you just waiting for the chance to step ahead of you in that long line of products trying to become top-of-mind.

Truth Two:
You are NOT unforgettable. Remember, every day all consumers are bombarded with tons of messages (an estimated 2700). An advertising "Shelf-Life" experiment showed the need for consistency in your marketing. For twelve weeks an Auto dealerships advertising bombard the marketplace in many different traditional forms (TV, Boards, Print, Direct Mail, and Telemarketing). In the week after the advertising blitz ended, 63 percent of the people surveyed remembered the advertising. One month later, 32 percent recalled the campaign. Six weeks after completion, 21 percent remembered or in other words 79 percent of the respondents were left without a lasting impression by the ad campaign.

Truth Three:
Keep telling prospects to come to your dealership. People make the effort to acquire desired products, and if you don't make them aware that you are offering something, they'll go elsewhere. If you don't remind your prospects that you are offering them something of value they'll forget. There are too many other distractions. After all you are competing against other dealerships for potential customers "top-of-mind", in each commercial you air, each billboard your prospects see, each TV spot, and so on.

Truth Four:
Marketing improves your business' identity. When you quit marketing, you shortchange your reputation, reliability and the confidence people have in you. You drift away from sales and service prospect awareness, acceptance and desire. But when you have established a culture within your dealership that fosters a long term cultivation of your prospects, you ensure being the answer to the question "Where do I want to buy my car?"

Truth Five:
Marketing is essential to your survival and growth. With very few exceptions, people won't know you're there if you don't get the word out. And when you quit marketing, you're on a path to nonexistence. Just as you can't start a business without marketing, you can't maintain one without it. You have got to establish a powerful Impact, Reach and Frequency program in order to bust through the media clutter set forth by your competitors.

Truth Six:
Marketing enables you to hold on to your old customers. Auto Dealerships survive on loyal customers and above all.......Referrals. They are key and when they don't hear from or about you, they tend to forget you.

Truth Seven:
Marketing gives you an advantage over competitors who have quit marketing. Imagine you are running in the "never ending marathon race from hell." You are neck-to-neck with your life long foe. You know that in order to win you must sprint the whole distance. You also know that if either one of you stops to catch a breath the other will inch ahead in the race. And the smallest of leads that may be just enough to win. Hey, that's the automobile sales game! Remember, there will always be a competitor right behind you just waiting for the chance to step ahead of you in that long line of products trying to become "top-of-mind." This is especially true in a troubled economy when promotion budgets are usually cut as the flow of revenue slows. A down economy can be a superb advantage to a marketing minded entrepreneur. It forces some competitors to stop marketing and gives you a chance to pull ahead capturing market share. And when the economy upturns you ride the expansion wave to riches and success.

Truth Eight:
Marketing allows your business to continue operating. This might be an obvious corollary of other points, but it is a critical argument for marketing.

Truth Nine:
You have invested money that you stand to lose. If you quit marketing, all the money you spent for advertising becomes lost as the customer awareness it purchased dwindles away. Sure, you can buy it back again, but you'll have to start from near scratch again. And that will cost more to get you back where you were.

Truth Ten:
Marketing maintains morale. Your staff's and your own personal morale are improved when you see your marketing at work, and especially when you see that it does work.
